West Coast Big Ten Shootouts and Late Night Drama
Cole Brennan
Fifty two to thirty eight in the Rose Bowl. That was not a traditional Big Ten afternoon in Pasadena. UCLA and Purdue put up ninety combined points on Saturday. The Bruins pull out a fourteen point win in their official conference opener, driven by big play after big play. But er before we dive deeper into the rest of the board, a quick shoutout to our sponsor, Jellypod AI. Now, back to the coast to coast madness. Out in Piscataway, New Jersey, Rutgers gave USC everything they could handle for three and a half quarters. Scarlet Knights held it within one possession until the final minute of regulation. But Jayden Maiava took over in the second half. He threw two huge touchdown passes after halftime to drag the Trojans to a forty two to thirty five victory. USC improves to three and zero overall, one and zero in Big Ten play, but man, Rutgers made them sweat every single yard.

I, I, I got to admit something . Adjusting to these late night West Coast kickoffs is wild. It is ten thirty at night in the Midwest, and I am sitting at my kitchen table with a cold drink, scribbling down box scores while the rest of the house is fast asleep. You look at a map of an eighteen team conference, and you realize live standings are flipping at one in the morning local time. It is a completely different league now.
Chapter 2
The Week Four Board and Indianapolis Standings
Cole Brennan
Let us run through the traditional Midwest slate from Week Four because there were some absolute blowouts across the board. Ohio State flattened Kent State fifty nine to three. Quarterback Sayin was crisp, eighteen for twenty two, two hundred and forty one passing yards and two touchdowns. Penn State took care of Buffalo fifty five to thirteen, behind a hundred rushing yards from Quinton Martin Jr. And Iowa pitching a shutout in Iowa City, fifty five to zero over Northern Iowa.

The real turning point game of the weekend happened at Martin Stadium. Northwestern jumped all over Colorado for a forty one to seven statement victory. The Wildcats forced three turnovers in the first half alone. That broke the game wide open early, and Colorado never recovered. Northwestern's defense set the tone on drive one and did not let up for sixty minutes.

Which brings us to the championship math for Indianapolis. Remember, there are no divisions anymore in the Big Ten. It is one single table with eighteen teams fighting for two spots. UCLA and USC starting off one and zero in conference action gives them huge early leverage. When you do not play every team on the schedule, losing even one league game in September can cost you tiebreaker positioning come November. Every single conference snap counts double now.
Chapter 3
Next Week Marquee Matchups and Big Ten Supremacy
Cole Brennan
Looking ahead to next Saturday, Week Five brings us a massive prime time matchup. Oregon travels to Los Angeles to take on USC at the Coliseum, seven thirty PM Eastern on NBC. Oregon comes off an eighty four point outburst against Portland State, while USC is coming off that dogfight at Rutgers. That is top tier television right there, with huge postseason implications on the line.

Earlier that afternoon, we get classic, physical Midwest football. Iowa heads to Ann Arbor to face Michigan at three thirty PM Eastern on CBS. Iowa is two and zero, Michigan is two and zero. Then you have Wisconsin heading into Beaver Stadium to clash with Penn State at five PM Eastern. That is back to back heavy hitter games in core Big Ten country.
Cole Brennan
Which leaves us with one main question as we turn the page to October. Can the traditional Midwest powers protect home turf against these Pacific Northwest and California transplants? Or does the new road to Indianapolis permanently run through the Pacific Coast? We are about to find out real fast. That is all for today. Talk to you after Saturday.
